We’re thrilled to honor Mel Chin at our spring benefit, which will take place on May 24, 2022. Our editors and Board of Directors kindly invite you to join us for drinks, a seated dinner, and celebrations of Chin’s extraordinary work.
The evening’s program includes remarks by Aruna D’Souza and an artwork created by Shanzhai Lyric for the occasion.
For nearly five decades, Mel Chin has created singular, idiosyncratic works that hinge on collaboration and manifest as actions, films, or objects, depending on the concept. Chin describes some works as “personal lamentations” and others as prototypes and experiments that engage “people in the process of being a ‘we.’” Turning toxic landfills, prime-time soap operas, and video games into venues for civic action, he has significantly expanded the bounds (and possibilities) of socially engaged art.
Chin pioneered the practice of “green remediation” with Revival Field (1991), a work of land art at a Minnesota landfill. He initiated the GALA Committee to conduct In the Name of the Place (1995–98), a legendary public art project involving the creation of artworks and props for the prime-time soap opera Melrose Place. Chin’s efforts to end childhood lead poisoning through the Fundred Project (2008–2021) activated half a million people. In 2018, he filled Times Square with the sculpture Wake and the augmented-reality project Unmoored (2018), creating an experiential portal into both a historic maritime industry and a future of rising waters. A survey of Chin’s work, “All Over the Place,” co-organized by the Queens Museum and No Longer Empty in 2018, was named by Hyperallergic as the best exhibition of the year in New York City. A recipient of many awards and honors, Chin received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2019 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2021.
We are requiring that all benefit guests be fully vaccinated.
