The Publication Intensive is a free two-week program in the history and contemporary practice of publication. Each year we invite applicants who are in the early stages of their careers (or enrolled in graduate programs) and have backgrounds in areas such as writing, art, literature, art history, new media, and design. During the Publication Intensive, Triple Canopy editors lead discussions and workshops with participating students, who research, analyze, and develop projects that hinge on new technologies but also mine the history of print culture and artistic practice. The program includes visits to studios of artists and designers, archives, and cultural institutions. The Publication Intensive addresses such questions as: How have artists, writers, and designers used the pages of magazines and books as sites of and material for experimentation? How have new-media publications challenged conventions of authorship and reception, only to have those very challenges soon become the foundation of the new economy? How have artists, writers, designers, and technologists responded to ensuing changes in the media landscape? How have responses differed in areas with disparate resources and relationships to technology? What might historical relationships between publishing, technology, and the public sphere teach us about these contemporary dynamics? How do issues of access and identity condition our interactions with online forums and digital media?

Upcoming session

COVID-19 Update:

To ensure the safety of guest educators, potential participants in this year’s Publication Intensive, our staff, families, friends, and extended communities, we decided to cancel the 2022 session of the program. We are saddened by the necessity of this decision, and look forward to planning next year’s session. In the meantime, we are discussing other methods of sharing aspects of the Publication Intensive curriculum with readers. What: A two-week program in the history and contemporary practice of publication. Sessions are held Monday–Friday, 10am–4pm (with some variation).

Where: The program takes place at Triple Canopy’s venue in Manhattan, and will include visits to studios of artists and designers, publishers, archives, and cultural institutions.

Who: We invite applications from recent college graduates, graduate students, and those with comparable experience; we discourage applications from those with much more experience. Prospective participants might have backgrounds in areas such as writing, art, literature, art history, technology, and design.

Cost: Tuition is free, though participants must arrange and pay for their travel and accommodation. All reading and viewing materials will be provided free of cost.

Flexible teaching modules permit Triple Canopy editors to tailor a given teaching residency or session to the specific needs of departments, faculty, and students. We draw upon an extensive network of contributing artists and writers, to invite guest speakers and workshop leaders from the region. Triple Canopy’s teaching approach incorporates informative lectures, seminar-style discussion, and hands-on workshops.
