We’re pleased to announce that novelist, short-story writer, and critic Lynne Tillman will be the honoree at Triple Canopy’s fall benefit, which will take place on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Please join Triple Canopy's editors, Board of Directors, and Publishers Circle for cocktails, a seated dinner, and various celebrations of Tillman’s extraordinary life and work. Tillman will be introduced by author Fran Lebowitz. Artists Robert Gober, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, and Cindy Sherman have created editions for the occasion. Writers Etel Adnan, Hilton Als, Lydia Davis, Sam Frank, and Ariana Reines have contributed to a special program featuring cover art by Paul Chan and Jean Paulhan.
Lynne Tillman is a novelist, short-story writer, and critic. Her most recent novel, American Genius, a Comedy, was published by Soft Skull Press in 2006 and cited as one of the best books of the millennium (so far) by the Millions. Tillman’s other novels are Haunted Houses (1987), Motion Sickness (1991), Cast in Doubt (1992), and No Lease on Life (1998), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction and a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her fourth collection of stories, Someday This Will Be Funny (2011), was published by Red Lemonade Press. Her other story collections are This Is Not It (2002), stories and novellas written in response to the work of twenty-two contemporary artists; The Madame Realism Complex (1992); and Absence Makes the Heart (1990). She has published four works of nonfiction: The Velvet Years: Warhol’s Factory 1965–67, based on photographs by Stephen Shore (1995); The Broad Picture, an essay collection (1997); Bookstore: The Life and Times of Jeannette Watson and Books & Co. (1999); and, most recently, her second essay collection, What Would Lynne Tillman Do? (2014).
Tillman’s writing has been widely anthologized and appeared in journals and magazines such as Tin House, Gigantic, Electric Literature, Black Clock, Bomb, and Conjunctions; her criticism has appeared in Artforum, Aperture, Nest, the Guardian, Art in America, and the Times Book Review. She writes a bimonthly column for Frieze magazine. In 2013, she guest-edited an issue of the Happy Hypocrite, whose theme was “Freedom.” She was an editor, with Scott Bryson and Jane Weinstock, of Beyond Recognition: Representation, Power, Culture, the writings of Craig Owens (1992).
Tillman’s Madame Realism essayistic fictions, which appeared in Art in America from 1986 to 2000, were the first of their kind to be published in a commercial art magazine. Recently, Tillman wrote the foreword to a Visual AIDS book, Stephen Andrews & Gregg Bordowitz in Conversation (2014). An essay on the work of Cindy Sherman will be included in a forthcoming museum-collection catalogue for the Broad in Los Angeles, and an essay on the work of David Wojnarowicz will appear in a revised edition of his Brush Fires in the Social Landscape, to be published by Aperture.
Tillman’s fiction was featured in the 1995 Whitney Biennial catalogue and in Semiotext(e)’s installation for the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Committed, a film written by Tillman and directed with Sheila McLaughlin, was in the 1985 Whitney Biennial.
Tillman was the fiction editor of Fence from 2004 to 2012. Currently she is a contributing editor of Bomb and serves on the boards of Fence, Housing Works, and Triple Canopy. Tillman has been a trustee of the PEN American Center (2009–14) and codirector of the writing program at Bard College’s Milton Avery School for the Arts (1993–2003); she is currently a professor and writer in residence in the English Department of the University at Albany—SUNY. Tillman teaches in the Riggio Honors Program at the New School and in the School of Visual Art’s MFA program in Art Criticism and Writing. She has previously taught at Princeton, Brown, Barnard, Columbia, and Yale. In 2006, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship; the same year, her papers were acquired by New York University’s Fales Library & Special Collections. In 2010, she was a Rea Fellow at the University of Virginia, and in May 2014 she was awarded the Kestnbaum Fellowship at the University of Chicago.
