Brian O’Doherty, the honoree of Triple Canopy’s 2013 benefit, has had a remarkable and multifaceted career as an artist, critic, and novelist. This booklet, published on the occasion of the benefit, presents a biography of O’Doherty that ranges from his early years as a medical doctor and researcher in the U.K. to his artistic career under his name and the alter ego Patrick Ireland (as well as other pseudonyms). Through his artwork and writing, O’Doherty has challenged the artist’s role in society and created pathways for venturing beyond the studio and gallery and into unconventional venues, especially publication, that we now recognize as vital.
